Banned Books

Something that really bothers me in the education system is the removing of books from school libraries. I think it is unreasonable the reasons why certain books are removed from school libraries. I understand that if the material in the book is not developmentally appropriate for the age of the children using the library; there should be restrictions for this. However it seems like some books are removed simply because some parent didn't like them.
As a student, I suppose I have a different point of view on this subject than a parent would. I read a lot of books when I was younger. When looking at a list of commonly banned or challenged books, I realized that I had read four out of the top five books before my freshman year in high school. I believe that each book that I've read has affected me in some way or another. I appreciate this and think I've grown from that.
I think that lots of times when parents want books removed from a library it's because they are worried that the beliefs and values they taught their children won't stick. I think that parents need to be confident that the values, etc. they instilled in their children will be present even if they are challenged by a book. I don't think books should be removed from libraries simply because parents are scared of what it may make their child think.

Week 11

We are now back to school again after Spring Break. I have a terrible sinus headache, and I wish I could have just stayed home. I'm excited because my bio test is rescheduled for Monday and I don't have WV History class on Friday. I hope the great weather continues into the weekend!

Week 10

There are only two days until Spring Break starts. I decided not to go to Chicago. I'm going to go home instead and just relax and get some work done. I can't wait until I can sleep in every day if I want to.

Week 9

This week the weather has been so nice. It is finally starting to look like spring. I hope that it continues to get warmer and doesn't go back to the cold weather. I have a lot of work to finish this week for midterms next week. Then it's Spring Break!

Week 8

Today has been a long day. I went to Charleston with the Marshall University Wind Symphony to play two concerts. We left this morning at 7:30 and didn't get back until 4:45. I'm very tired, plus I have a cold.

Week 7

The weather has been crazy lately. I went to the park on Saturday with just a sweatshirt, and then that night it was snowing! I wish it would just turn to springtime. My classes are really starting to pile up. I hope I can handle them all.

Week 6

Today we are working on a Power Point presentation. This should be an easy assignment because Power Point is a simple program to use. I skipped my first class this morning because I was so tired. The professor does not take attendance, though, so it doesn't really matter if I miss or not.

Week 5

This week the weather is so nice outside. The temperature feels like springtime. However it started raining as I was walking to this class. In class this week, we are learning about Microsoft Publisher.

Week 4

This is the fourth week of class. I thought classes would be cancelled again today because of the snow, but they were not. Today in class we created two new assignments. The first was a blog, on which I will make 15 posts before class ends. The second was a wetpaint account. Both accounts were easy to create.

Week 3

This week class was cancelled because of the weather. The huge snow from the day before made it very difficult to make it to class. I hope it snows again soon!

Week 2

The second week of class was very simple. We were assigned to write a short paper about Web 2.0 sites. It was interesting to see the wide variety types of Web 2.0 sites.

Week 1

Today was the first day of CI 102 class. We went through the syllabus and had the opportunity to ask questions. It was nice because class let out early. I'm hoping this class will be easy.
